Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Remarks

England opening batter Zak Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of comments made by captain Ben Stokes regarding the team environment as no place for "weak men".

Stokes delivered this message in several interviews following his team's loss in the second Ashes series versus the Australians earlier this month.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, Stokes stated he had let his message to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I've done all the talking in recent days that I required," remarked Stokes.

But, following Crawley scored a knock of 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

The captain made the "weak men" observation subsequent to England were beaten in Brisbane to fall two matches behind.

The England squad subsequently took a break to a Queensland resort between the second and third Tests.

Before this match, he said his team had held "raw" talks and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to stay in contention in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman asserted the guidance from Stokes and head coach McCullum had remained consistent with their prior tenure in charge.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, unchanged," said the opener. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. We believed we were capable of something special going into this game."

The Hosts On the Verge of Historic Ashes Triumph

Crawley's dismissal on day four came during a decisive three-wicket burst by Australian spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Brook and Ben Stokes – left the chasing side 207-6 in pursuit of a notional target of 435.

This means, the home team require just four more wickets on Sunday's final day to secure an insurmountable 3-0 lead after three Tests.

Defeat would prolong England's drought in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth straight away Ashes series defeat.

This series will be completed in just 11 days of cricket – after England fell the initial matches in rapid time respectively.

Not since 1921, when the Australians sealed victory in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided so quickly. The hosts have also won in eleven days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"This is disappointing," admitted Crawley. "We came here to regain the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel now."

"There remains plenty to play for and we'll definitely view it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been tough. Australia is a formidable side. It was always going to be tough touring here to face them. They were the front-runners and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Position In Question

While Crawley's innings in Adelaide likely secures questions about his immediate place in the England team, Pope looks under immense pressure for his position in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 in England's second knock on Saturday, extending his poor record against the old enemy.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has never made a half-century and averages 17.62.

Only one other English batsman in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and returned a poorer average.

But, the opener insisted any suggestion his teammate is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," said he. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has played some really good knocks. It is noise externally. There's no chat of that nature on Ollie amongst the players," Crawley finished.
